 DBC Raises the Roof
DBC Raises the Roof

Special guests attended the dedication service for the new roof atop Debert Baptist Church. The special service was in memory of Earl Stevens whose kindness to the community's churches provided the resources to complete the task.

The church combined this dedication service with its monthly celebration of birthdays and anniversaries. A special cake was created, complete with a replica of the church made in the frosting.

The special guests included extended family members of the late Earl Stevens and representatives of those who installed the new roof.

Earl Stevens left a legacy in Debert. He had bequeathed gifts to both the United and the Baptist churches. The former installed a secure roof some years ago and now the Baptist Church enjoys a secure roof thanks to the gift from Mr. Stevens. The Trustees and special guests gathered for the dedication of the new roof in memory of the late Earl Stevens. Guests for the occasion included members of the Stevens family, Mr. & Mrs. Gerald Stevens of Lower Onslow. Another cousin on hand was Carol Wynn, a regular at DBC.

Pastor Bill joked a little about water stains on the ceiling but there was no joking about the installation of the steel roof. He noted that a local company was the supplier of choice. Gerald and Donna Cole of Community Metals were on hand for the service and received numerous compliments. The pastor noted that Mr. Cole had treated the church "more than fairly" in its time of need. Not only did Community Metals supply the materials, but they also coordinated the installation, completed in just one day.

The faith message for the day centred on building the church. The pastor noted that the roof is very important, but neither the roof nor the walls can stand without a proper foundation.

Referring to scripture from Matthew 16:13-20, the message centred on Jesus building his church on the rock of faith, the rock of truth. Built on the strength of such a foundation, the church of Christ has spread throughout the world and has continued in strength over 2,000 years. Debert Baptist is an extension of the Lord's church and it is built squarely on faith as its foundation.

Following the service, the congregation and guests gathered for a barbeque. They had intended the whole event would be staged outside but the rainy weather forced everyone indoors. The only ones who got wet were the cooks who tended the BBQ, Meghan King and Doug Ross.
