 Community Supper Put on Hold
Community Supper Put on Hold

After much soul searching, the churches in Debert have decided to
postpone the annual community supper which is usually held in late
July. The United and Baptist churches have partnered in presenting
this popular, annual event since the celebration of Debert Days. The
supper has grown over the years, with a sellout last summer. In fact,
organizers ran out of food leaving the workers hungry after their
volunteer effort.

Earlier this year, the United Church advised that they could no longer
participate due to the scope of the undertaking and numerous other
church projects. At first blush, the Baptist Church proceeded with the
supper alone, booking the community firehall for July 29th.

After closer consideration of the logistics, the Baptist Church felt
the project would be too demanding to go it alone this summer. Notice
has been sent to the fire brigade to cancel the booking for July.

However, buoyed by the success of a recent ten week dinner series,
Debert Baptist is not cancelling the community supper. "We are simply
postponing the event for this year," says Pastor Bill Martin. "We hope
to use this year to properly plan and establish partnerships to make
the supper an even bigger event next summer."

Many people look forward to this supper. It has become a focal point
for visitors and for family coming home on vacation. "We know that
many people will be disappointed," says Pastor Bill, "But instead of
rushing ahead alone, we would rather postpone and do it right next
year."
