Designed to serve, we invited those for whom Christmas had become a challenge. For the elderly and those alone who might have struggled with the task of cooking a traditional Christmas dinner. For those alone and others without means, it was a place to gather for conversation, games and true fellowship. For those in need it was a secure, warm and friendly place to join with others who offered their Christian love.
The name Christmas at the Café is derived from our Saturday Youth Group, The 412 Café which gets its name from the Biblical instruction in 1 Timothy 4:12. Led by Pastor Aaron and his talented wife Sherri, leaders of our youth group, they coordinated the entire event.
Family and friends cooked, baked and decorated in preparation for the day. Then, with all the trimmings done, they played host to the guests and supporters.
The little café opened at 2 pm with a number of game and activity tables for children and adults. An unexpected but most welcome minstrel arrived to play and sing. The sound of children’s laughter was everywhere in the church and more serious adults quietly chatted the afternoon away.
Dinner was served at 4 pm and, oh what a dinner. Sherri outdid herself with a turkey extravaganza, but the dessert table remains her specialty.
Some would say it was a small crowd but not one of the two dozen or so people who dropped in showed any concern for the numbers. While Pastor Aaron noted there were more servants than there were people to serve, let it always be so. If we truly follow Jesus Christ, there should always be more who are ready to serve.
